Black Stars winger Christian Atsu was in action for the full 90 minutes for Newcastle United today as they succumbed to a 2-1 defeat to London Club Chelsea Fc.
The Ghanaian international after spending most part of the first half of the season on the Newcastle bench is now getting consistent matches to play under boss Rafael Benitez. He was called upon once again to feature for his club today for their away English Premier League fixture against the blues.
The winger operated from the right flanks and looked sharp on the day despite his inability to register an assist or get on the scoring sheet. He however combined with his forward line to threaten the Chelsea defense on a number of occasions.
Pedro Rodriguez and Willian Borges Da Silva got the goals for the winners with Cirian Clark netting the consolation for the losers. It is fair to say that it was Christian Atsu’s efforts that led to a corner for Newcastle which eventually led to the side’s goal.
With the defeat, Newcastle sits in the relegation zone on 18th position and will need to start winning if they want to avoid moving to the Championship at the end of the Premier League season.
Next up Newcastle will be coming up against Blackburn Rovers in the replay of the third round of the FA cup tie in mid-week. From there they will travel again to Cardiff for their next Premier league match. Atsu will be hoping to get some minutes build on his current impressive form.
